Most common mistake that first-time manufacturers often make is underestimating the time duration to finish the manufacturing process. The whole process will usually take about 6 to 12 months.
However, if the manufacturer performs very satisfactorily and everything prepared properly without encountering any problem, then you can have the product at your door in 6 months.
On the other hand, if takes more time for you to make a decision, and if you make a mistake or two along the way or just aren’t familiar with the process, then the process will more likely take 9 months, up to 12 months especially if the product is complex.
Here are some areas to be considered during the entire process:
Stage 1 – Quotes, Manufacturers, Import Agents
The first thing to consider is to conduct a research. Expect meeting various import agents and getting quotes from different manufacturers.
Basically this is the stage wherein you have to take into consideration all factors that should be considered in choosing a partner in the whole process of the business. Thorough understanding and analyzing the process should be given into account so that you can choose a partner who could be an asset to your business. Wise and smart decision making should be made on this first stage.
This process usually takes 2-3 months.
Stage 2 – Product Samples, Pricing & Finalization of Contract
The second stage is where you have to carefully examine the sample if the same meet the necessary requirements of the product that you want to be manufactured. The goal here is to make sure both sides share an understanding of what the final product should look like.
Once a perfect sample of the product had been approved, negotiation pertaining to the price, terms and conditions in the contract should follow. Up until this point you may still be talking to multiple manufacturers. At this stage, once you know what the costs are for various manufacturers and have a sense for the working relationship with each one, you can choice now to which you want to work with for the rest of the project.
Finally, once you’re ready you’ll send a draft of the purchase order to the manufacturer. They’ll check it over to make sure it has everything they need is covered and send it back to you with any revisions if revision is necessary. Once your purchase order is signed, then you officially placed an order with the manufacturer.
This whole process may take 2-4 months.
Stage 3 – Manufacturing
In this stage the product is being manufactured. You should make constant monitoring as the process is going on. In order to make sure that the product is being manufactured according to the standards that you have set during the stage of negotiation. To ensure that the manufacturer is making products according to your set of standards you should be up to date of the whole process.
The manufacturing process can take 1-2 months and it may take longer if you’re ordering a lot of products or if your product is highly complex.
Stage 4 – Shipping
Finally, the product is ready for shipping. In this stage your job is to make it sure that the product will be delivered without any problem especially in the customs. You must see to it that all necessary papers for shipping the products are ready and it should be properly documented.
You have to consider the shipping period from one place to another. The shipping time from China usually takes about 2 weeks if there will be no problem in the shipping.
As you can tell, there are many stages and factors to be considered in the manufacturing process. To make sure that no problem will occur and products will be delivered as stipulated in the contract you should see to it that the whole process is well monitored.
